Early History Branch
Publications and General Information
Ongoing publications of the Early History Branch include two documentary
series, Naval Documents of the American Revolution,
edited by William Bell Clark, William James Morgan, and Michael J. Crawford
(1964 ; 9 volumes to date) and The Naval War of
1812: A Documentary History, edited by William S. Dudley, Michael
J. Crawford, and others (1985 ; 2 volumes to date).
These series are based on the branch's extensive collection of microfilms
and copies gathered from the United States and abroad. In addition to these
long-range projects, the branch also produces briefing papers, articles,
and brochures, and has published The Reestablishment
of the Federal Navy: Historical Overview and Bibliography as No.
4 in the Naval Historical Center's bibliographic series on naval history.
The branch verifies official Navy manuscripts for historical accuracy and
assists scholars, researchers, and anyone interested in America's naval
past by directing them to appropriate resources.
