Hospital Corpsman Third Class John Henry Garner, USN, was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1 st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. On May 29, 1967, Petty Officer Garner was returning from a search and rescue operation mission on board a river patrol boat when it came under enemy rifle fire and was overturned. Petty Officer Garner was either killed or drowned when the boat overturned. His remains were not recovered.
